Studying for my PGCE at Southampton University to teach English, my tutor was Michael Benton. One of our tasks was to create a file of ideas, experience, observations. As creative writing was a large part of my degree, I included poems inspired by paintings, an exercise I intended to use with pupils when I began teaching. Two of these poems pleased Michael Benton who was at the time compiling ‘Painting with Words’ with his brother. I was asked for permission to them to be published. A joyous moment!
